doing it as a hobby, but if we did want to take it to a fete or a small festival to sell...what licensing and administrations would we need ?

Hello All

This was our first year of making our own cider. From the results of
the first batch it appears we have done ok. The cider is very smooth
no nasty after taste but possibly lacking in depth of flavour and
could be slightly sharper (any tips?).

I am very happy with the results however and would like to thank
everybody who gave me advice over this season. Look forward to racking
off my next batch.

I live in the north of Spain (Asturias) a little region where cider is, by far, the most apreciate drink. We are really proud of our cider and many people collect all kind of things related with it. I'm one of then and I have a great deal of cider labels (more than 2.000). I would like to contact with some English collector to exchange with him. I have many Spanish cider labels to offer to somebody who could give me English cider labels.
My mail address is jose.ojeda.lopez@hotmail.com

I have to say I have always been a big fan of Yarlington Mill, especially the tipple made by Gwatkins (http://www.gwatkincider.co.uk)

Fantastic aroma, great colour and full, crisp flavour, just like a real cider should be!

There is also a Gwnyt y Ddraig bottled blend which is very nice too!

What cider are you currently enjoying?

We are artisan craft cider-makers based in Hucknall, Nottinghamshire and uniquely make ciders using Nottinghamshire-grown apples *only*. "We" are a husband and wife team who spend quite a bit of time travelling the UK to visit cider-makers, large and small. We have been making cider for many years but only started to sell our ciders after being talked into it at a CAMRA festival (we are also long-standing CAMRA members) and of course after sorting out the legal formalities. We have so far won 5 "CAMRA Cider of the Festival" awards.
We source all of our fruit from inside the county-boundaries of Nottinghamshire, much of the fruit we use we grow ourselves in our garden or small orchard; we have recently planted a further 36 cider-apple varieties and are planting a further 50+ cider-apple varieties this coming 2010 / 2011 winter (the latter are already heeled in and acclimatising, awaiting planting out). We also use fruit collected from other apple-growers and small-holders in Nottinghamshire, as well as wildings and crabs we find growing along the highways and byways of the county.
We do not try to copy or ape ciders made in other parts of the UK; our aim is to produce the best clean-tasting ciders we can from locally-grown fruit.

Does anyone have any views concerning the suitability of Clochard apples for cider making? Now that we have purchased a crusher and a press, this year we have started making cider again. Most of our apple trees are Clochard and whilst this variety is held in high regard as an eater, we have been able to find nothing concerning its use for cider production. In the absence of other input, we'll find out next spring as we've already pressed four batches - there is about 300 litres of apple juice fermenting in the old bake house - and we reckon on making somewhere in excess of 500 litres when all the apples are down.

Hello,

I have just received an email regarding a apple tree nursery clearance in Somerset. The owners are looking to get rid of a lot of their nursery apple trees. If you collect they are charging £5 per tree to cover costs. This is very cheap for trees of this age. If you are interested give Tessa a ring (see copy and paste of email below). They have a number of cider varieties.

"Hi Katherine

Thanks for your time.

As mentioned we've recently purchased 15 acres of ex nursey land from Scotts Nurseries, on which is planted a variety of trees, mainly fruit trees (the majority of which are currently 6-8 feet tall). We are looking for them to be cleared this winter (or at least the majority of them) so please feel free to pass my details on to anyone who might be interested. I understand that there are a number of local, old fashioned varieties.

Below is by no means an exhaustive list (it probably represents only about 25% of the varieties); don't hesitate to call me if you have any Q's...

Hello,

I,m Ed French from checkley Brook Cider. I am a small scale producer in Herefordshire. I live and work in Cambridge and sell most of my cider here. Did anyone else have a late fermentation this year because of the long cold winter? Last weekend I took a reading of 1010 gravity when usually my cider is a 1001-3 by this time of year. Lots of sugar still to process. anyone else had this experience?
Cheers Ed

Dear Real-cider I would be very grateful if you could give me some advice please.

I have been working as a self-employed gardener for over 5 year and lived and ran a pub for many years. My drinking passion is cider. I would love to develop my gardening business in a specific way: that is by buying a piece of agricultural land, growing cider and making my own local cider on a small scale. This might sound ambitious, but I have the ambition and the vocational desire to do it. Sadly, my knowledge of growing cider apples and cider production is virtually zero.

Saying this, starting from a blank sheet would allow me to utilise modern techniques, etc. Could you, therefore, please point me in the right direction of some literature that would allow me to obtain the knowledge I need to fulfil my cider making dreams.

Many thanks. Steve from Kinver, West Midlands.

Hi there or might I say "Servus"!

I live in deepest Bavaria, near the Alps. I'm a Brit expat influenced by Jamie Oliver and Hugh's stuff. I have these 80 year old apple trees in my garden which according to my local "Gartenbauverein" were orderd to be planted by The Führer himself back in the day when my house was built. nI love these trees - May blossom, autumn apples, full of bees too. It was one of the features of the house - two old apple trees which made me want this place.

Every year I harvest the apples, which are known as St James Apples as they come very early, and borrow a mill and press the juice and bottle up the juice. Last year's harvest sadly is still sitting undrank in the cellar as it was too acidic. How might I go about turning this into far more useful CIDER?

Hello Cider Folk

I enjoy my cider but living in the Highlands of Scotland makes it difficult to find real cider regularly on tap. Fortunately Blackfriars in my local town, Inverness, has Westons on tap most of the time.

I am a local CAMRA member and do my bit for cider lovers by keeping this page as uptodate as I can -

Living in Vancouver, Canada for a couple of years (I'm a Brit) shocked me at what passes for cider over here and in the USA. If you thought Strongbow was bad then you should try some of the 'ciders' here (I use the term loosely). They come in many fruit flavours and taste sugary, chemical and repulsive. I would love, not only to warn potential victims of these attrocities, but to find out if there is a list or association of craft cider & perry producers over here. -

So, you have found the forum, and want to learn all about apples, cider, and maybe even cider making? Perhaps you have been enjoying cider longer than me, probably!

About me - I'm a 30 something techie guy, that loves being outdoors. Currently my day job involves handling various client projects for my web company http://www.callendercreates.com which I am director of.

My love of cider was in the early 2000's, when a friend introduced me to the many types of delicious Somerset ciders. Hecks, Wilkins and his own produce were put in front of me, that evening began in a cider appreciation night, and the rest is history.

I like to attend as many cider events, festivals as possible. There are a great range of beer and cider festivals, where you will be able to sample the good stuff, perhaps local cider to you. My favourite cider festival is probably Welsh cider festival (http://bit.ly/453XUK) every May bank holiday.

This year we have also started making our own cider (http://bit.ly/fVHnN) which we hope will encourage our learning of the production process of cider making on a small scale.

More details about me and the real cider site here - http://www.real-cider.co.uk/about-realcider/

All the best with your cider journey, let's hope we can champion the cider movement together!

Dear Real Cider,

I have a small paddock in which I would like to grow some apple trees with a view of possibly making a small amount of cider.
I know nothing about what trees to purchase or if it is even a practical idea.

Can you advise on where is the best place for me to get help, buy trees or in fact learn all about it.
I live near Norton Priory in Cheshire.

Best regards,
Tony Price.

If I sell a tonne of cider apples to a cider producer in the UK, how much am I likely to get for it? I live in Brittany, have 350 cider apple trees, of mixed variety, and am told maximum yield of 6 tonnes. For the price I got paid for them last year by the local cooperative, I am thinking it would be more cost effective for me to actually ship them to the UK!! Would be interested in an answer to my query if anyone has the time to indulge me! Many thanks, Lizzie nicolasmehta@hotmail.com
