At Poverty Lane Orchards in Lebanon, New Hampshire, Stephen Wood and Louisa Spencer make cider from true cider apples. Here’s a look at the process.

The video show various Farnum Hill folks pressing, harvesting and making cider.

It’s interesting to see how they have taken a variety of English cider apples, like Kingston Black that have grown very well in the New Hampshire climate in America.

As a follow up to the orchard management post, I thought it would be useful to publish a 3 minute video on why, and how to prune apple trees.

There is a whole art and science behind managing and maintaining that your fruit trees stay healthy all year round, however the basics here are all you need to get started.

Cider making with Roger Wilkins

Roger has been cider making since he was a boy, taught the skills of the ancient art by his grandfather.

The business was passed onto Roger through the family and now he produces around 15,000 gallons each year at his home at Landsend Farm, Mudgley, near Wedmore.

Roger, who is married to Mary and has three grown-up children, said: “Many years ago, cider was made at nearly every farm in the area”.

People come from across the whole country to sample Roger’s cider, which sells at just £1 a litre, or about 56p a pint.

Anyone wanting to sample Roger’s cider for themselves can go to – Landsend Farm, Mudgley, Wedmore,

Cider making at Woods cider mill

Here is a wonderful video from the guys at Woods Cider Mill located pressing a batch of this years apples in Weathersfield, Vermont.

They have a twin-screw cider press was purchased from the Empire State Press Co. in 1882. It was originally run by water power, but was moved from the mill pond in the early 1900′s and is now turned down by hand and electricity.

Making about 200 gallons of cider per pressing. Pretty impressive. In the video, you will see the cider boiling, this is to make ‘Boiled’ Cider. The technique of pressing the apples is exactly the same as for real or hard cider making.

The apple juice is boiled in a stainless steel evaporator, and concentrated to about 7 to 1. It is just concentrated real cider with nothing added. Boiled Cider is used with hot water for a delicious hot drink, in cooking, as a topping to pancakes or over yogurt or ice cream.
